Indonesia to deport human rights researcher

Indonesian officials are planning to deport an Australian human rights researcher who has been detained on Madura island, north of Java.

Tirana Hassan, originally from Adelaide, was visiting Madura on Monday with the US-based group Human Rights Watch to investigate sectarian violence suffered by the local Shiite Muslim community.

After other locals complained to the police about the presence of a foreigner she was quickly detained.

While Indonesian and Australian officials say she was released yesterday, she has been questioned repeatedly since then.

The local immigration office says she did not have permission to conduct research in Indonesia and now faces deportation.
