PAIR HELD FOR INSULTING ISLAM
The editor and publisher of a top English-language Indian daily have been arrested on charges of "hurting the religious feelings" of Muslims.
The Statesman's editor Ravindra Kumar and publisher Anand Sinha were detained in Calcutta after complaints.
Muslims said they were upset with the Statesman for reproducing an article from the UK's Independent daily in its 5 February edition.
The article was entitled: "Why should I respect these oppressive religions?"
It concerns the erosion of the right to criticise religions.
In it, the author, Johann Hari, writes: "I don't respect the idea that we should follow a 'Prophet' who at the age of 53 had sex with a nine-year old girl, and ordered the murder of whole villages of Jews because they wouldn't follow him."
Mr Kumar and Mr Sinha appeared in court on Wednesday and were granted bail.
Apology
Angry Muslims have been demonstrating in front of the offices of the Statesman since its republication of the article.
Police have broken up the demonstrations using baton charges several times this week.
Some Muslims close to the Jamiat-e-Ulema e Hind (The Organisation of Indian Scholars, a leading Islamic group in India) later filed a complaint with police alleging that the publication had "outraged their religious feelings", which is an offence under Section 295 A of the Indian Penal Code.
Mr Kumar has said he has already issued a public apology for reproducing the article.
"I admit it was an editorial misjudgement but it was never intentional," Mr Kumar told the BBC in an interview

This is just another sick example of islam a 1400 year old fraud committed on humanity by a lier, thief, rapest, maimer, murder and hisperverted favorite, 'the child molestation of underage females,' all for the express purpose of making islam supreme throughout the entire globe. islam is the deamon, threat to the entire planet and any psycho idiot that believes mohammed is a prophet and his revelations that most came after someone questioned the act, robbery, hate, murder, or sexual perversion he intended to perform so the next day he could tell the followers that god, allah had told him whatever it was was good with god and part and parcel of the submission allah alledgly desired and demanded of his followers, is either stupid, bind or retarded or as mohammed did wants to be able to rape, hate, kill, rob, pillage or perform perversion of underage females with religion making it ok. The war with islam had not really started, it will be a World War II type of confrontation and once and for all this fraud on humanity must be iradicated from the face of the Earth and from the minds of these simple minded blind hate filled people. I'm not the only Christian on this planet that has had enough of this sick ideology putting not only Christian's lives in dange but any innocent civilians around the globe. There is not that much time left before all the muslims crying a pleading about non-existent muslim abuse and rights violations; shortly there will begin to be real violations and they all will be rightious and each and every muslim that has watched the worldwide maiming, murdering and child molestation, rape and kidnapping of unerage females in the name of making islam supreme throughout the globe and not saying anything or protesting will be getting exactly what they dealy deserve. islam must be iradicated and if it's by force; even their famous by the sword, too bad, it's going to happen.
