Islamic groups shore up support for Sheik

medium_1314111.2.jpgThe leaders of more than 30 Islamic organisations from around the country have issued an open letter in support of the embattled Mufti of Australia Sheik Taj el-Din al-Hilaly.

The letter calls for end to the debate about Sheik al-Hilaly's comments

A total of 34 groups have signed on to the statement, saying the whole episode has been filled with hysteria and that, in their view, it's now closed.

Curiously, missing from the list of supporters is the Lebanese Muslim Association, who ultimately can decide the fate of the Mufti.

Also today, NSW Opposition leader Peter Debnam has written to the Premier urging him to block all public funding and boycott the Mufti's backers until some clear action is taken against him.
