Washtenaw County pool policy changed to allow street clothes

medium_0_1647034_4_00.2.jpgYPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) -- Washtenaw County has changed its policy to accommodate Muslim women and girls who want to cover themselves fully while swimming in public pools

Jumanah Saadeh was on a seventh-grade class trip last summer to a public pool in Ypsilanti when she was admonished for violating swimsuit policies that prohibit street clothes.

The 14-year-old from Ann Arbor went into the pool wearing pants, a full-sleeve collared shirt and her Islamic headscarf, but was told to get out.

The teenager left the pool, but was encouraged by her teacher, Muslim leaders and a civil rights attorney to take action.

"I felt humiliated and disappointed because I was denied an opportunity to have fun with my friends just because I'm Muslim," Saadeh told the Detroit Free Press for a story Monday.

The new policy went into effect this summer
