Saudi-based NRIs funded 7/11 blasts

MUMBAI: Saudi-based NRIs funded the 7/11 blasts, which claimed as many as 200 innocent lives and left scores injured, Anti-terrorist Squad sources have revealed.

More than $2.7 million were transferred from Saudi Arabia to Mumbai during last year to carry out the terror attacks. The Lashkar-e-Toiba and ex-SIMI members used a major fraction of this money over a period of six months to execute the terror attacks on the suburban trains, sources said.

An officer investigating the blasts said that NRIs in Saudi Arabia had funded the Gujarat Muslim Revenge Force in 2003, when it carried out twin explosions at Gateway of India and Mumbadevi - killing 53 people.

“The motive behind the train blasts is the Gujarat carnage. The operation was meticulously planned to target Gujarati diamond brokers”, he said.

Atleast a dozen locals were involved in sending the money through hawala for the operation. While the key operator behind the transaction, Kamrul is absconding, two others-Altaf and Badrul Jama have been detained. The operatives who funded from Dubai are still unknown.

Police suspect that a considerable amount is stashed away in bank accounts or fixed deposits as only a part of the funds were used for carrying dry runs, procuring or transporting explosives and arrangement of accommodation and commuting expenses of the operatives.

While there is still a debate on what the modus operandi was, ATS claims that there were only three planters and one chief coordinator who timed the bombs and waited in the subway at Churchgate railway station to give the go-ahead signal.
