Mahathir: Muslims must build own weapons
Kuala Lumpur (dpa) - Former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad has urged Muslims to build their own weapons, including rockets and fighter jets, instead of relying on Western imports, a news report said Thursday.
Mahathir, who retired as one of Asia's longest-serving leaders in November 2003, argued that Muslims would be oppressed as long as they lacked home-made military might.
"Muslims are weak because we have not made the necessary preparation to defend and protect ourselves and the masses," the Star daily quoted him as saying. "We could not do it because we have not mastered the knowledge of science."
Mahathir, whose country is mostly Muslim, said weapons currently were imported from Western nations, leaving a measure of vulnerability in the defence systems of the Muslim world.
"To enhance our own defence capabilities, we must build our own brand of sophisticated weapons," Mahathir said.
"Not that we (Muslims) want to attack others, but we need to protect our people."
Mahathir, well-known for his outspoken criticisms against Western powers, was addressing mostly Muslim students at a gathering in the northern state of Kedah.

LOL!
What an ignorant fool.
That is exactly why I scoff at anyone who says that World War III will be a Muslim/Non-Muslim war. All this talk of a "Clash of Civilizations" between Muslim and Non-Muslim is a joke to me. If all of the Muslim nations wanted to war against the West that war would be much much shorter than the 6 Day War Egypt suffered. It would be closer to a 6 Minute War. And It's not as if all these Third World Muslim countries are going to make huge leaps in Science and Technology in future generations...not as long as they're using their Quran for their Science/History/Lietrature books....The Arab/Muslim world will NEVER EVER be world millitary powers.
No worries about Malaysians running around with home-made AK-47's....lol.
