Thai Police Say Attacker of Hindu Shrine was Muslim
BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - Police in Thailand say a 27-year-old man who destroyed a world-famous statue of a Hindu deity was a Muslim.
The man was beaten to death by enraged onlookers Tuesday after breaking into the Erawan Shrine in downtown Bangkok and shattering a golden four-headed statue of Brahma with a hammer. Police said the man had a history of mental illness.(THATS WHAT the always say)
A continuing Islamic insurgency in southern Thailand has left more than 1300 people dead since violence flared in January 2004.
Bomb and gun attacks occur almost daily in three southern provinces that are the only Muslim-dominated provinces in Thailand, which is mostly Buddhist.
