AN OPEN LETTER TO THE LEADERS OF THE FREE WORLD:
AN OPEN LETTER TO THE LEADERS OF THE FREE WORLD:
PRESIDENT MUBARAK SHOULD STOP COPTS’ PERSECUTION!
While President Mubarak is visiting several countries in Europe in an attempt to show the world that he is an advocate of Democracy and Human Rights in the Middle East, his regime continues to persecute the Copts on a daily basis! We believe that the best hope of securing the Copts’ basic civil liberties, and ending their vulnerability to persecution, is to establish a truly integrated and Democratic Egyptian society, expressing equality.
The Copts (Christians of Egypt) -the world's largest minority without rights- have been facing sporadic massacres besides the ever intensifying social-economic hardships, violence and a diminution of their basic human dignity. Although their number may have reached in the sixteen millions –in honest census that they are denied to have- they have become dispensable second-class citizens. More than eleven million Copts live outside Egypt, of whom about two million have settled in the United States of America, and several millions in Europe.
We do firmly believe that President Mubarak has the ability, power and authority to end the severe atrocities that many of the Copts face today, and that he can stop the coming massacres or genocides of the Copts! More than forty massacres took place during President Mubarak's regime, whose government aided these criminals against the victims! The most obvious massacre was that of Al-Kosheh (an upper Egyptian village) at the first day of the millennium, when 21 Copts were killed by the Muslims, aided by police support! These criminals were set free, and the bias justice system did not prosecute any of them, at any judicial level!
Savage attacks and rapes on Coptic females, in an effort to convert them to Islam, have been multiplying in the recent years. Muslim converts are being assaulted, tortured, and jailed. Copts are deprived from reaching higher levels in society, and governmental positions. They are severely underrepresented in the political parties, and are denied dignified positions such as Deans of colleges and universities, Chiefs of Policing and Armies. The media is dominated by Muslim fanatics who impose their opinions on the Egyptian communities, especially children, who are susceptible in believing many of their views. In all aspects of life, Copts are treated as substandard individuals, second-class. This is not equality, this is not Human Rights, and this is defiantly not Democracy!
It will be extremely difficult for Mubarak to continue promoting himself as a campaigner and defender of Democracy and Human Rights for people living in other countries while denying a very large segment (more than one fifth) of the Egyptian population from exercising these same rights. If indeed President Mubarak was serious about preventing terrorism on a world-wide level, he should first look to his own country, and government, which is committing several acts of terrorism against Copts.
We are not seeking confrontation, but we are appealing for a way to stop the intended ethnic cleansing of our people. Such situations may become reality if you intercede on behalf of the Copts. We appeal to you to make the Coptic case an integrated part of Middle East's peace equation.
May God Bless you for your Support. Monir A. Dawoud, MD, President
